King Marko’s fortress – Monastery Treskavec

The most favorite hiking tour for the locals but also for all visitors in Prilep. Completely deserved epithet as this hiking tour, for petite efforts, provides perfect combination of culture, nature, history and panoramas. It starts at the location “Elephant”- millions of years old preserved Monument of Nature. It continues to King Marko’s Fortress, one of the biggest fortifications in the Balkan Peninsula. Next stop is the localities “Anvil” and “Red Stones”– historically important for the Macedonian Anti-Fascist resistance in the period of World War 2.

The tour ends at the monastery of Holy Mother of God (Treskavec), one of the 4 most important spiritual and cultural places in Republic of Macedonia. It was built in XIII century on the foundations of a polytheistic (Greek) sanctuary. Enthusiasts who want a bit more thrill, guided by a professional, from Treskavec can reach the highest point “Zlatovrv” (Golden Apple) and consume the beauty of almost half of Macedonia.

In the monastery guests will have the chance to get familiarized with its history along a personal conversation with priest Kalist. After the deserved rest and a good dose of natural beauty, for the true adventurists and adrenalin lovers, nearby the monastery organized can be paragliding flight over Pelagonija. The flight will be performed with professional instructor and the excitement of the flight will be a spiritual companion for a long long after its performance.

The return to Prilep’s centuries old settlement Varosh can be organized with a van/minibus from the monastery, or by a round hiking trail surrounded by a granite mountain relief typical for Prilep region only. In that case, technical characteristics of the trail will extend to 15 km/5.5 walking hours. Its difficulty level, from easy will shift to moderate. If chosen the return option by van then offered is an opportunity for a visit of the only tobacco museum in the Balkans.
