Macedonia is landlocked country with one third of its territory covered by forest out of which 16% are endemic Balkans species. With abundance of mountains, unique relief, natural lakes, rivers and biodiversity, Macedonia is home of the oldest National Parks in ex-Yugoslavia, National Park Pelister (proclaimed in 1948), Mavrovo (1949) and National Park Galicica (1958). Country’s territory is habitat for several thousands endemic flora and fauna like the Brown Bear, Balkan Lynx, Molika tree, and Ohrid trout.
Macedonia has three natural lakes: Ohrid Lake, UNESCO protected and the oldest natural lake in Europe, Prespa Lake, Part of the PRESPA UNECSCO Biosphere reserve and Dojran Lake known for many battles during the World War I. Reserve Ezerani, located in the southwest of Macedonia, is famous world-wide known bird habitat hosting 40% of all the bird species in Europe.
